The High Performance Blanket Alternative Advantage

High Performance Blanket Alternative (HPBA) represents a new generation of high performance mulches, and a new philosophy on what premium mulch should be. We believe that elite erosion control does not need to compromise plant establishment, and that ultimately the best erosion control comes from healthy vegetation. To achieve this, we unlocked the erosion potential of flax fibres, some of the strongest plant fibres nature has to offer and integrated them into our mulch formula. Our proprietary tackifier formula has been optimized to bind fibres together and adhere them to the soil while preserving moisture in the soil where plants need it most. HPBA is designed to closely contour with the soil surface and provide a stabilizing fibre matrix in a thin reinforced layer. This allows for erosion protection while maintaining seed to soil contact. This is the secret behind excellent erosion protection and rapid plant establishment.

Innovation for Extreme 2:1 Slopes and Difficult Environments

HPBA mulches have been designed for performance in some of the toughest environments nature has to offer from the Canadian North, to the central American tropics.  These are the features that can be expected with HPBA mulches:

  • Rapid mulch curing with some erosion protection in 2–3 hours and full erosion protection in 24 hours
  • A mulch fibre matrix that can last well over 12 months without impairing plant growth
  • A favorable carbon to nitrogen ratio that mimics what occurs naturally in nature
  • Close contouring to soil surface
  • Easy mixing and high tank loading capacity

HPBA is designed with nature in mind and is non-toxic and made with fully biodegradable organic ingredients

Application Rates

High Performance Blanket Alternative (HPBA) is designed to provide premium BFM (Bonded Fibre Matrix) performance for steep slopes in difficult environments. The following rates are recommended for installation:

Slope Recommended Rate (kg/ha) Recommended Rate

(lbs/acre)

Bags per acre
Moderate to 3:1 slope 3368 3000 60
3:1 to 2:1 slope 3930 3500 70
Greater than 2:1 slope 4,490 4000 80

Installation Guidelines

HPBA is a one-step mulch product that allows the applicator to install seed, fertilizer, and mulch in one pass when required. HPBA is also designed for high tank loading capacity, allowing applicators the ability to apply more mulch per tank load. For optimal results:

  1. Fill hydroseeding tank 1/3 full with water and add seed, and fertilizer at the specified rate.
  2. Agitate the tank with the auger at 2/3 rpm and begin adding the mulch while water is continually added.
  3. Mix one bag of HPBA mulch (22.7kg) per 100 gallons of water and continue agitating until all of the mulch is added.
  4. Continue agitating the mulch at 2/3 until completely dispersed in the slurry. Ideally all of the mulch, fertilizer, and seed will be added to the tank but the time it is ¾ full.
  5. Complete tank filling.
  6. Reduce auger speed to ½ and spray HPBA either by hose or by cannon.
  7. Ensure that HPBA is applied to the slope in two different directions if possible to minimize the risk of “spray shadow”.
